The Juggernaut that is – Google announced on Friday that from March 1st some of their own websites including Google Apps and Google Docs will “not work correctly” on older browsers such as IE6 – woot.

With IE6 now being nearly 10 years old and being the biggest lump of monkey crap there has ever been, this isn’t much of a surprise; some websites have already dropped support for IE6 including Twitter and Youtube, but the fact that Google are jumping on board is, i’m sure to please both web designers and developers everywhere and maybe make some people who wouldn’t normally be, aware of the browser they’re using and why they should upgrade..

Microsoft are going to be supporting IE6 up until 2014 and I still do most of my websites to support the browser (apart from this one – damn png transparency) especially client work and as we know most corporate firms are still on XP/IE6 systems but this can’t last forever and I look forward to the day when the minimum people are on is IE7.

The jQuery Slider Gallery by jqueryfordesigns.com is a great bit of jQuery that I used recently but it did come with some problems for me, mainly it seemed like you could only have scrolling items within a inline list, I found a solution.

Now i’m no jQuery expert and will probably never claim to be, I do find jQuery to be an excellent tool and there are some great scripts out there including the aforementioned, but I came across a problem and looking at the comments on their demo page, a few others have too.

The problem is that the demo shows images in a list and has the CSS styling of:

.sliderGallery ul li {
 display: inline;
}

It seemed like no matter what else you added to the li the entire script went into meltdown, this was mainly because the script needs the list elements to be inline so no widths needed to be stated which, is great when all your images needed to be different widths like mine did but, I needed to change it as the spec for the project I was working on required text to go alongside those images, and that text needed to be below the images.

I realised that using the following CSS:

.sliderGallery ul li {
 display: inline-block;
}

Got the scroller working how I wanted it in Safari 4, and now my para was appearing below the image as required. The problem for here on was getting it to work for everything else; with firefox not liking inline-block at all and me having to get this whole thing working in IE6 – gulp – I thought i’d never get it to work.

However, once I started thinking about how to get inline-block working in the most popular browsers, I quickly found a solution that works in, IE6, IE7, IE8, Firefox and Safari:

.sliderGallery ul li {
 display: -moz-inline-stack; /* Firefox - Needs to come first */
 display: inline-block;
 *display: inline; /* For IE */
 zoom: 1; /* Magic zoom for IE6 */
}

It took me a fair long while to get this figured out but now it works fine for me on my project and thought it might help others who don’t seem to be getting an answer from the creators.

The book is called ‘Bastardised’, it’s created by Bunch, costs roughly £30 (with postage) and consists of almost 300 takes on their own logo by various artists, some are great, some are terrible, but they’re all fun.

The book is pretty limited in quantity as only 1,500 are going to be made (Mine’s #793) so I recommend getting your order in now if you like books that are small on the text and heavy on the design inspiration.

There are crappy logos and then there are logos that try to take off not just good, but extremely famous logo’s… and fail. Whilst sat waiting in traffic the other night, I saw a van with this on and well, died a little.

Now, ok, it’s just a blue and red logo, I get what you’re saying, but to me it’s also taking everything that is pretty much universally loved about the FedEx logo, and crapping on it. Now, i’m assuming that this company aren’t anything to do with FedEx, but you wouldn’t think so.

We’ve all seen the FedEx logo at one point in our lives (watch Castaway if not) and the UK Mail logo pretty much does the same job, but one great thing about the FedEx logo is (apart from it being original) is the arrow, the subtle arrow between the E and X. It shows positiveness, forward thinking, speed, hell – quick delivery.

Now take another look at the UK Mail one, nice backwards arrow you got going on there guys.

I have to say, since I haven’t had my Xbox 360 around for the past few weeks, there are a few benefits, no, not getting a life. But it’s finally giving me a chance to play my Playstation 3!

I think the word ‘addicted’ comes to mind when speaking of the brilliant Killzone 2 and with that came my first Platinum trophy, I also completed Naughty Dog’s excellent “Lara Croft Killer” Uncharted: Drakes Fortune but since then I haven’t done much else, other than use it as a Blu-Ray player!

I have been tempted by Uncharted 2 but with the constant barrage of games on the 360 I just haven’t had the time nor the money to invest in 2009’s Game of the year, but if it’s anything like the original i’m sure it’ll be fantastic.

Anyone know where i can get it cheap?!

So as you may or may not know, I’m a bit of a gamer, and I have this kind of ‘weakness’ for not only buying games and lots of them, but buying the ‘Limited Edition’ versions of games.

I don’t know why this is, I guess it might stem back to me just always liking to collect shit, stuff I don’t need, but find cool anyway. So in the January sales I went out and purchased the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Veteran Edition.

It’s a real nice limited edition game too, perhaps not as cool as the Fallout 3 one, or even the Halo 3 Legenedary, but, still very cool. The set consists of the Hardened version of the game which, includes the game (duh), Call of Duty Classic, and an art book.

I do love these concept art books you get with games, wish I could draw like those guys! You also get a really nice statuette of the games main hero Soap MacTavish, I’ve enclosed a few photo’s of Soap in all his glory, the detail on the statue compared to the in-game version is pretty impressive.

Soap (In-game)

Hey all, welcome to the latest version of my personal website, I have to openly admit that I do change my website too often, but i’m sure i’m not the only one out there who gets bored very easily, especially if you’re of a creative mind.

Anyway, I decided to do-away with my old design and revert back to using Wordpress! Wordpress is something i’ve used in small doses over the last few years but, I’ve decided to use it full-time from now on, as not only is it a great blogging platform, but it gives me the ability to just be able to update things on here either from my laptop, iPod, whatever, so I don’t always have to be locked away in my office anymore for updates!

Regarding my new logo, i’ve never had what i’d call an “official brand” – it’s never really bothered me either, but I thought i’d atleast make a bit of an effort this time around.

I really wanted to incorporate my initials of CG into the logo as they go quite well together but nothing’s ever worked right in the past, with that in mind and also recently being shown a fantastic piece of logo design which, a fellow designer pointed out to me by Graham Smith for his client ‘Zulu Safari’ I started work on what you now see above.

Graham Smith's "Zulu Safari"

The initials C and G use the typeface ‘Alba’, a font i’ve used before on my old logo which, simply stated ‘col’ in lowercase, it’s a real nice font and this time the G really caught my eye. Once i’d got the C and G together, I simply tweaked the distances and rotated the G in illustrator to pull the bottom half of the G inwards to make almost a triangle shape, then when I looked at it for a minute, I thought to myself – “That looks a bit like a nose and a pair of eyes!”.

I then simply added a smile to the bottom, originally I had a rounded smile to match the rounded C and G but it also looked a little too much and so I went with flat edges instead, I felt it really finished off the mark. I did then attempt to insert the domain name into the ‘mouth’ section of the logo, and to almost make them look like teeth, but that too was just a bit much, and also didn’t really work when the logo was made smaller.

Anyway, I hope you like the new website, personally I think it needed the overhaul, and i’m glad updatings as easy as logging into Wordpress once again! Hopefully you will sign up and keep track of all my upcoming posts!

Wow, again. Xbox 360’s have to be one, if not the most unreliable pieces of hardware to ever hit the shelves. My Xbox 360 Elite broke lastnight – again.

I’ve now had 2 Xbox’s – The first one, needed a new motherboard and CD drive (within one year of owning it), I then purchased the supposedly superior 360 Elite, for that specific Xbox’s CD Drive to also simply stop opening all together within about 6 months of purchase.

Now, yep you guessed it, I got the dreaded Red Ring of Death, superb! Now all I have to do is send that off to Germany (once again) and wait 3 weeks to get it back (once again) for it then to probably go into meltdown once again (once again).
